Good point. I think people can have incidences of depression with it being "life-long" and in some cases we know that some people do experience life-long depression.

We are all pretty vulnerable. Perhaps this is why I believe that writing and talking about our children and adapting our perspectives about them (and heck, life) is really one of the most important things we can do.

It's beside the point, I know, but I have to politely disagree about depression being just "the way we respond to life". The best way to explain might be to compare a "depressed" response to your reaction to finding out your little guy is autistic... You struggled a bit, you felt moments or periods of despair, but kept forging forward. If you developed depression, you would start thinking that he'd be better off without you, that everything always goes wrong for you; your ability to take pleasure in anything (including him) would dry up, and you'd *stay* that way.

Sometimes, the person can regain perspective just with guidance or exercises...other times, even if the pain itself is no more severe, I guess the brain latches onto the painful beliefs so securely that it simply can't let go on its own.

Well said!
Life must be characterized by a sense of universal responsibility; human to human, nation to nation.....There are no costraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress, except those we ourselves erect.
