Good luck! Perhaps some posts sharing those tricks and the progress you two make will be in order as the opportunities arise!

Stephanie,
I agree. Adam did start out scribbling but it didn't mean he wasn't trying. It just meant that he didn't have the same motor control and planning ability back then. And yet, he did have the ability to plan and write those letters. So there is even a disconnect with what I believe.

And now we're here. He is drawing beautiful drawings. We are off to the art store today to buy him a sketchbook and pictures he can copy. As a curator of art I used to teach children too. I used music along with their art-making and have a few tricks up my sleeve that I think Adam will enjoy.

I agree the comments in the article are unnecessarily derogatory. The idea that lack of motor control implies lack of intent is just so very, very wrong.

I try to encourage the boys in their art. Aside from your own influence, that's the primary motivation for me to try to learn to understand art as a discipline. Willy's drawings tend to be darker, pushing very hard with the pencil, and very tiny and very busy (he can fit dozens of Pokemon in significant detail on a single page). Alex's art is bigger and slanted somehow. I don't know if that's an issue with control, with vision, or with his intent. It's certainly a unique expression.

To say these are just scribbles is just wrong.

My favorite picture of all time was an engine, coal car, and caboose that Ben made at 3 years. At age 15 he still is "' the boy who loves trains".
