Well said, Estee! There is significant pressure on parents to take a stance that has not been justified, but merely assumed. To look more critical at our assumptions is to open ourselves to new possibilities and to question the appropriateness of our own behavior. For some, this is more challenging than others.

But even as we "agonizes" over whether our children will ever be able to talk or to attend a regular school or hold a job or live independently, we have to remember that the child is a person. There's so much language used that the person is gone and autism is left in place of the person and only, if only we could remove the autism we'd find the person. But the person is there. Those who cannot see the person aren't looking for the person, they're looking for the autism so that's all they see.

In a world of profit motivation above everything, it is inconceivable that any parent does not question their options and it is their right to do so.

It is easy for those who have healthy kids and let's call it a normal exsistance to judge. They have never had to cry, pray, work or wonder it their kids wold ever speak to them, or look them in the eyes or say mommy or daddy. Indeed, a parent who loves their child would move heaven and earth to help them or make them better. That is what all these parents are trying to do...

Nicely done. Dove's discussion does not portray the context. I hear a man who is over simplifying & polarizing the situation. These topics are global to all parents but we must be cognizant of the complexity of the human experience. Dove is not coming from an emic perspective.
